Terminology

Terminology is crucial in software localization.

Terminology is the specialized vocabulary of a subject field, i.e. a set of terms representing the system of concepts of a particular subject field. 

Terminology is not about translation memories and should NOT be confused with UI elements.

Termbases (TB)/terminology databases (TD)/term lists are NOT the same as translation memories.

How do TM and TD differ?

Translation memories store whole segments or even paragraphs, whereas termbases store terms (single words or expressions), that have to be translated in a very specific and consistent way.

Do UI elements belong in TD?

In software localization, user-interface options (such as Save As, Download, and others) are not terms; they can include terms that should be added to the termbase/term list but the UI elements in general should not be included in terminology database, unless they represent a standalone concept.

Tableau terminology database

On Tableau, the terminology database (TD) "lives" on the platform called 🔗Kalcium. There are live connectors from Kalcium to both Phrase, where we work on UI projects, and to Trados Studio, where UA projects are translated.
