Translation Memories (TM)

Translation memory is a linguistic database, commonly known as TM, that a translator uses to help leverage words during the translation process.  Leveraging words helps to keep translation costs down, produce quicker turnaround times for projects, and maintain consistency from start to finish. Translation memories store the whole segments, strings or even paragraphs.

UI Translation Memory

UI TM is managed directly in Phrase. You can search in it when working on UI tasks via Search tab in Phrase (see how to do this in section ➡️How to work in Phrase).

UI TM in Phrase is visible in the right panel of the editor (online or desktop). After selection of "CAT" view the TM is providing matches between selected segment (1301 on sample below) and TM segments. In the image we can see that TM is providing 66% match with existing string.

In the middle of CAT pane we can see TM source comparison to see the difference between translatable string and TM match and below in the CAT pane we can see TM name and dates for TM string creation/modification.

Once the release is complete and published, client exports the TM from Phrase for us and we store it on FTP: 🗃️/Tableau/FromJTE/_References_/01_TM/UI_TM export. The export should be used when working on UA tasks.

UA Translation Memory

UA Translation Memory is managed inside the Trados Project Package and is shared with translator with the project handoff.

Results of matches from UA TM in Trados are visible in the top of Editor screen. TM is providing matches between selected segment (125 on sample below) and TM segments. In the image we can see that TM is providing 72% match with existing string.

TM Maintenance

TM Maintenance is provided twice a year for both UI and UA Translation Memories. More about this process is available on page ➡️TM Maintenance
