Terminology Database (TD)
What is Tableau TD?
Tableau recognizes that the terminology management is a key component of good quality translations. Tableau TD is located in Kalcium (also called QuickTerm), which is a platform created by Kaleidoscope. Tableau TD is a concept-based terminology database, which means that each entry in the TD represents one concept and may contain multiple terms (e.g. full form, acronym, short form or variants).
You can access live Tableau TD in three ways:
Online via 🔗https://tableau.kaleidoscope.online/terminology/search, login details can be found on our FTP 🗃️ /Tableau/FromJTE/_References_/10_Terminology/JON_Users_Tableau_Kalcium Credentials_external.xlsx. Please, do not change the password in the Kalcium profiles, they are shared between multiple linguists.
Phrase - there is a live connector between Kalcium and Phrase. More info about how to use Tableau TD in Phrase can be found in section ➡️Working in Phrase.
Kalcium plugin provides a live connection to Kalcium in Trados Studio. More information about how to set it up can be found in section ➡️Kalcium plugin installation.
Before every UA Main hand off, we also export the TD and you can add it to Trados project on your end. Exports are saved here: 🗃️/Tableau/FromJTE/_References_/00_TermBase/00_SDLTB_version
Tableau terminology entry overview
Each Tableau entry has to have certain mandatory metdata. These metadata (also called attributes) provide information about the context, definition, origin and grammatical properties of terms.
Entry level:
Category - there are six possible categories:
Product - main category of entries managed and maintained by Jonckers. These are mostly Tableau-specific terms, terms that are used in Tableau UI/UA content very often, or data analysis-focused terms.
General - these are entries managed and maintained by RWS/Moravia, which translate marketing and sales content for Tableau.
Branding - managed and maintained by Jonckers, these are trademarked or non-trademarked terms, mostly product names of Tableau or other 3rd party companies
Geopol - managed and maintained by Jonckers, these are terms that are geopolitically or otherwise sensitive
Data set - managed and maintained by Jonckers, these are terms that come from sample data books that come with Tableau products. It is very important that these terms are translated consistently to avoid confusing users.
Slack - terms imported from Slack team, these term do not have to be followed. We are working on improving filtering out these terms from the view.
Definition - important to understand the concept.
Source of Definition - information about the origin of definition.
Source term level:
Status - very important metadata to check. Status values can be: Admitted (approved), Preferred and Deprecated (obsolete). Do not use Deprecated terms in your translation.
Term type - full form, short form, abbreviation, acronym, variant
Part of speech
Context - a representative sentence that uses the term in question.
Source of context - information about the origin of context sentence.
How to search in Kalcium online TD
In Search settings, you can select the Search type: wildcard, fuzzy, full text or concordance. Each can be used in different scenarios.
The most useful one is usually Fuzzy search, with the similarity rate set at 65-75%.
Wildcard: Searches for terms that match the search expression (taking into account the wildcards used).
Fuzzy: Searches for terms that are either identical or similar to the search expression. This will also find terms if the search expression is misspelled or incomplete. The search expression must be at least three characters long.
Full text: Searches for all text fields of the termbase are searched for the search expression. The search expression must exactly match the searched word; there is no fuzzy search.
Concordance: Searches for terms that are identical to the search expression or have a similar form. Unlike fuzzy search, concordance search compares each word of the search expression with each word of the term.
Note: If you select Fuzzy or Concordance search, you can also choose the similarity rate (fuzzy) value.
In Search language(s), you can select a language in which you want to search for terms, usually a source language.
In Displayed language(s), you can select which target languages you want to see.
Note: Your settings will remain the same even after logging out, until you change them again.
2. Entry view settings - we created various stylesheets for your convenience. As default, we are currently using Landscape_view, which is easier when you are displaying multiple languages one under another. Feel free to try out the other ones to see what suits you best!
Note: Studio stylesheet has been created specifically for Kalcium plugin in Trados Studio, that's why the font size is a bit smaller.
You can also search the term by entry ID.
For example, the entry ID 1607. Type ##1607 in the search dialog box.
The results of your search are displayed in the bottom left part.
You can click between the results to display details of the terminology entries in the main part of the screen.
Note: When searching by an entry ID, you need to use two hashtags before the entry ID.
Challenging terms
Some Tableau terms can be pretty challenging. Based on some previous feedback from client, we put together a separate sheet with tabs containing various challenging terms with helpful screenshots from Tableau product UI.
